Sr. Consultant - Travel Demand Modeling

AS A SENIOR CONSULTANT IN TRAVEL DEMAND MODEL DEVELOPMENT –

You will play a critical role in expanding our footprint within U.S. transportation agencies. You will leverage your extensive network and deep understanding of the transportation sector to drive business growth, develop strategic partnerships, and oversee the successful execution of high-impact projects. This role requires a strategic thinker with a proven track record in business development and project management, as well as a passion for improving transportation systems through the development of state of the practice and advanced travel demand models.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Management

  • Manage all stages of the project cycle including travel model design, data management, analysis, implementation, estimation, calibration, validation, application, documentation, and training.
  • Develop project plans and effectively resource and manage plans to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget and with a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Develop contingency plans to mitigate risk and ensure project deliverables and deadlines are met.
  • Establish and maintain a consistent and effective communication mechanism to project teams, clients and company leadership.
  • Establish and maintain processes to manage project scripts and software.
  • Maintain and provide ongoing progress reporting.

Business Development

  • Develop and maintain client relationships and networks to develop both repeat and new business; build brand awareness and inform market strategies.
  • Responsible for business development activities, which includes identifying opportunities and preparing winning proposals and budgets.
  • Support leadership with data collection to inform business growth within existing and new markets.
  • Participate in industry events, e.g., presentations, publications.

Data Analysis

  • Participate in the development and implementation of innovative analytics, including deploying various research methods; analyzing data; developing models; implementing travel demand models, calibrating and validating travel demand models, applying travel demand models, and developing documentation.

Communicating data analysis to clearly and effectively to clients.

Staff Management

  • Actively engage in training and development of staff members.
  • Manage and supervise staff.

KEY INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Analysts and Consultants: Builds relationships with junior staff across the firm, identifying skills and abilities needed to support projects. Will serve as a mentor and trainer to junior staff identifying projects to build skill sets and careers.

Project Team Members and Leaders: Serves as the project leader and continuously communicates and sets expectations with team members. Addresses roadblocks or issues necessary to meet project deliverables. Reports project progress and escalates issues as needed.

Clients/Customers: Works closely to fully understand needs and ensure superior services are delivered. Through excellent work, build and maintain close relationships for ongoing or future business engagements.

CHALLENGES AND DECISION MAKING

Challenge: Demanding Clients

Decision-Making: Work to understand the customer issues by obtaining concrete examples and referring back to the project scope when necessary. Escalate the concerns and pull in other resources, e.g., Technical, Director or a member of Management to provide additional comfort and support for you and the customer.

Challenge: Underperforming Team Member

Decision-Making: Revisit expected deliverables and ensure there is clarity of the specific expectations for their role, and ensure they are using the proper tools and resources. Document and escalate to the individuals manager. If there is no resolution, requests for replacement resources may be made.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in a technical field, such as data science, engineering, computer science, or mathematics.
  • 10+ years of experience and demonstrated skill in traveling demand modeling
  • Experience developing travel forecasts and building and validating travel demand models in one or more transportation modeling package (TransCAD, Cube, EMME, and/or VISUM)
  • Solid understanding of and proficiency with Python
  • Efficient manager of people, workflows and processes with the proven ability to manage multiple competing projects, priorities, and deadlines
  • Proficient in statistical analysis, data management, and presentation
  • Ability to write clearly and succinctly in a variety of formats (e.g. email, technical documentation, instructions)
  • Effective in a variety of communication settings: one-to-one and in groups; with peers, supervisors, staff and clients; in-person and long distance.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Solid understanding of and proficiency with GIS (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.)
  • Facility with multiple statistical analysis/database software/packages (e.g., SQL, SPSS, sciPy, scikit-learn, R, SAS)
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects successfully
  • Demonstrated ability to develop business opportunities

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Requires periodic travel
  • Frequently involves standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Operates a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine or computer printer.
  • Frequently communicates with colleagues and clients. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
